Healthy Thanksgiving Desserts - Joy of Mom

When we gather together with family, time is always precious. And we want it to slow down just a bit to take it all in. Thanksgiving is one of those times. Your mom’s warm smile as you put the finishing touches on a recipe that’s been passed down for generations. Your kids racing to the door to welcome everyone who walks through it. The aroma of your Thanksgiving feast filling your home. And the gratefulness of it all when sitting around the table with your most favorite people in the world.

We wanted to share a few of our favorite healthy and wholesome recipes to share with your family and friends this holiday season.

One. These Chia Seed Peanut Butter Superfood Cookies from Yummy Mummy Kitchen are chock full of nutrition, and gluten free! Filled with peanut butter, oats, and chia seeds, these cookies are guilt-free but definitely delicious enough to serve at Thanksgiving!

Two. There are so many dishes that need to take up space in our ovens for Thanksgiving. We love the idea of a healthy, no-cake dessert! This apple and grape medley from Skinny Taste is filled with crisp apples, delicious grapes and crushed walnuts topped with a sweet creamy sauce.

Three. This pumpkin pie pudding from Popsugar has a secret ingredient: avocadoes! There’s also high-protein silken tofu hidden in the pudding, making this recipe incredibly healthy and nutritional.

Four. Nothing says “fall” and “Thanksgiving” like cranberries! This cranberry-pecan loaf from An Edible Mosaic is paleo! This loaf is grain-free, moist, dense, and absolutely beautiful! The color of the cranberries makes this loaf look irresistible.

Five. Peanut Butter Cups are scrumptious, especially when they’re healthy! These little treats from Dashing Dish are filled with almond milk, low-fat Greek yogurt, protein powder and stevia! All of the taste, with a fraction of the calories.

Six. Want to have the taste of apple pie without having to eat a big slice of sugar? These apple pie oatmeal cookies from Amy’s Healthy Baking are made with whole wheat flour, instant oats, coconut oil, agave, and a whole bunch of other great ingredients! [I checked the link and it works fine for me. What browser are you using? Or are you on your phone?]

This year, when you share that special meal with the ones you love, you will know that you are only giving them the best. The best food, yes, but also the best love, laughter, and gratefulness that this holiday brings.

We wish you and yours a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving season brimming full of family, friends, and new treasured memories!

Last weekend, the stars shined bring on the Emmy’s red carpet but none had that special glow quite like the celebrity mamas!

Here are just a few of our favorite fashionista moms:

Best Dressed Moms on the Emmy’s Red Carpet

Amanda Peet is a mother of two daughters with Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff. At the Emmys she looked incredibly elegant in this Michael Kors floor-length black brocade dress.

Popcorn & Pics: Favorite Family Home Theater Flicks

entertainment, family

Summer is coming to a close as fall is in the air, and, for many of us, school has begun. It’s my favorite time of year. One where I just to want to pause… and soak it all in. The magic of moments. Family moments… One of our favorite things to do on a weekend evening is curl up on the couch with loved ones, make popcorn (the old fashioned way) and watch a fabulous movie. Not a fan of popcorn? Make your family some of our favorite movie night-worthy snacks!

In honor of back-to-school season, here are some of our school themed family home theater flicks.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) Matthew Broderick stars in this iconic film, as a young student who takes his infamous day off while trying not to get caught. His jealous little sister, played by Jennifer Grey, is simply classic.

School of Rock (2003) Jack Black stars as Dewey Finn, who poses as a substitute teacher at a formal elementary school. He doesn’t teach normal school lesson plans, but rock music, making a band out of his “fake” students. Jack’s passion for music and, ultimately, his students beautifully shines through.

High School Musical (2006) Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens take the lead in this Disney favorite. Two teens who come from completely different worlds are brought together through their love of song and dance in this memorable musical.

Rudy (1993) Sean Astin portrays Daniel ‘Rudy’ Ruettiger, in this inspirational film. Rudy was  told he couldn’t do anything, especially play college football. But he is dedicated to overcome the obstacles and finally play for Notre Dame. Talk about a heartwarming film.

Miracle (2004) starring Kurt Russell as coach Herb Brooks, tells the incredibly true story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. The ultimate David versus Goliath.

Freedom Writers (2007) Hilary Swank takes the lead as the inspirational Teacher-Erin Gruwell. Who takes it upon herself to teach her “at-risk” students about acceptance, tolerance, and dedication. So beautiful, powerful and inspirational, on every level. (This film is PG13 and more appropriate for older children.)

To Sir With Love (1967) Sidney Poitier stars as Mark Thackeray, the ultimate teacher who must transform high school students from London. A beautiful classic.

Happy viewing! And, most importantly, happy viewing with your precious family!

Popcorn & Pics: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. #joyofmom

This is a special Date Night edition of Popcorn & Pics where we recommend the perfect, get out of the house, couples night out film for Mom and Dad. The modern day update of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. provides action, two charismatic leading men, beautiful women in gorgeous vintage fashions and all of the thrills of a James Bond film with a hip throwback vibe. Based on the 1964 series, the film directed by Guy Ritchie stars Henry Cavill (the new Superman) and Armie Hammer in a 1960’s set plot. CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Kllya Kuryakin must join forces against a mysterious criminal organization.

Behind the Scenes: Turing a beloved vintage TV series into a new movie isn’t an impossible mission. You just need two irresistible leads like Hammer and Cavill. Six foot five Hammer (“Social Network”) says that he wouldn’t make a good spy in real life. “I’m too tall. It makes it hard to blend in. Plus, I find it hard to keep a secret.”

Fun Fact: A sequel is already in the works.

Popcorn & Pics: Fantastic Four #joyofmom

Are the kiddos begging you for some fun movie action? Check out the brand new Fantastic Four where we get to meet our quad of superheroes all over again. This time around, the four outsiders find themselves teleporting to a new and dangerous universe where their bodies get rebooted. Once they’re back home, these four must confront their new super powers as they try to save Earth from evil. The cast includes: Kate Mara as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing.

Behind The Scenes: Jordan said that this is a story of how four strangers turn into a real family. “What I loved about ‘Fantastic Four’ is that it’s about a group of friends who face the odds on their way to becoming that family. They fall apart and come together,” he said. “The message is how you need strong people by your side and those people become your family.”

Fun Fact: Security was running high so there would be no plot or costume spoilers. When Jordan went to the bathroom during outdoor shoots, they had to guard him. “They had to put a gigantic cloak on me because there were photographers sitting on rooftops trying to get a picture of the suits, which could wreck it for the fans. So, we took every precaution.”

This movie is a great escape from the hot weather of early August, so grab your little superheroes and plan to have a fantastic time!

PS: Also remember that moms are full of superpowers {on a daily basis}!

Just say baaaaa. Mommies can rejoice because there is FINALLY a big screen movie for the little ones. Shaun is the most adorable little sheep and a little brainiac barnyard boo boo who decides to take the day off and have some fun. Of course, our little furry guy gets into way more trouble than he anticipated. He has a major mix up with a farmer and has to climb a very steep hill on his way to a place called the Big City!

Behind The Scenes: Shaun is a British stop-motion film based on the animated TV series and also a spin-off of the hit “Wallace and Gromit” franchise. Shaun in the series has madcap adventures around his farm where he is the leader of his flock. You know this is a quality project because it’s from the legendary Aardman Animations and commissioned by the BBC. If your child falls in love with Shaun, you can order the seasons on Amazon.

Fun Fact: The series even has its own spin-off called “Timmy Time” starring Shaun’s small cousin and aimed at preschoolers. Don’t dare call these creatures livestock. Call this love-stock!

If your kiddos have a hard time putting down their favorite games then this is the movie that will finally let their fingers take a rest because it’s about video games. One of our favorite and most lovable comedians Adam Sandler stars in the story of aliens who misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war and then attack Earth in the form of our favorite video game characters. Yes, that’s Pac Man gobbling up San Francisco! Along with Adam, the film also stars Kevin James, Peter Dinklage and Michelle Monaghan. It’s perfect, mindless, end of summer fun from director Chris Columbus who gave us the first “Harry Potter” film.

Behind The Scenes: Get ready to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop in a very different way. Star Kevin James plays the President of the United States. “It’s a different role for me,” he says. “As president, I’m commanding, yet accessible.” Kevin adds, “He’s a good guy in a family film, which makes me really happy because those are my favorite films.”

Fun Fact: The busy Dad of four did the film for one reason. “Like most parents, I really want to sit next to my kids in a movie theater and laugh with them,” he says. In the end, you can sit next to your kids, grab a little popcorn and let “Pixels” cool you off on a hot summer day.

Enjoy Pixels and, most importantly, enjoy it with your precious family!

Popcorn & Pics: ANT-MAN #joyofmom

He’s just an uber-busy Dad who wants to protect his daughter. He’s also a sleek suited superhero who knows how to shrink way, way, way down! (Please don’t take him to a picnic either) Introducing…Ant-Man, the next big budget action flick of summer starring one of our movie favorites, Paul Rudd from “This is 40.” Paul plays the duel roles of Scott Lang and Ant-Man in the story of a man who must find his inner hero to conquer major odds. When his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) plots a heist to save the world, Scott find the ability to shrink down to ant size and grow in strength at the same time. Why? “He’s basically just a man trying to protect his daughter from harm,” says Rudd. “Isn’t that the best reason of all to save the world? You want to protect your kids at any cost.” (Gotta love that!!)

Behind the Scenes: Rudd is 46, but got into super shape for the film by leaning out his diet and giving up his beloved burgers. Yet, he still worried about a scene where he had to show his six-pack. “I am very self-conscious,” Rudd said. “The day we shot that scene, I think I ate only one almond. And I still felt so bloated!” He did love wearing the sleek Ant-Man suit. “I even wore it on my day off,” he joked. “I wore it home. You should see me do karaoke in the Ant-Man suit.”

Fun Fact: Rudd is a Dad to son Jack, 9, and daughter Darby, 5, with wife, Julie Yaeger. “Originally, my son said I wasn’t cool enough to be Ant-Man!” Rudd fretted. Then they went to an early screening. “My son said, ‘Dad, you killed it!’ That was the best review of ever.” (Is that so sweet…. I literally have chills now.)

This is a fun movie for families where you’ll be rooting for the little guy with the huge heart!

Popcorn & Pics: minions #joyofmom

I wish you could see the big yellow circle on my kitchen calendar because I’ve been waiting – along with all the kiddos out there—for the family fun event movie of summer! Do I need to say their names? Hint: They’re bright yellow and have energy to spare! You don’t know what they’re talking about most of the time, but can’t get enough of listening to their jibber-jabber. In their first ever stand alone movie, Minions Stuart, Kevin and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). She’s a super-villain who along with hubby Herb wants to take over the world. The Minions prove to our kiddos that it takes a village of yellow creatures to band together and save man and minion kind! My heart is with the Minions here!

Behind the Scenes: Sandra Bullock says that she had “a total blast” playing a bad girl. “That’s how bad I am in real life,” she joked. “Actually, it’s always fun to play the bad girl because it’s so meaty.” Is her preschooler son Louie excited to see his mom animated and ready to wreck some havoc. “He doesn’t know it’s me in the movie,” she says. “I want him to just enjoy the movie. I can tell him when he’s older.” {Don’t you love that!!}

Fun Fact: Moms, if you loved “Mad Men” then listen hard because Sandy’s hubby is played by none other than Jon Hamm. Other celeb voices in the movie include Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Carell. A lot of the big stars are here because they know that it’s the Minions world. We just live in it! And your kids will love living in it!

I know we’re going to be in a yellow mood this weekend with my favorite animated friends. Minions rule!

Popcorn & Pics: Batkid Begins

Popcorn & Pics: Batkid Begins #joyofmom

“BATKID BEGINS” What makes up a superhero? Strength. Courage. Defeating the odds. Those words fit an amazingly heroic child named Miles Scott. He’s a cancer survivor in remission and the star of a new film that we can’t recommend highly enough called “Batkid Begins”. A feel good news documentary the whole family will love. The film beautifully displays that when an entire city comes together it can show a child that love is everywhere, and heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

When Miles was sick, his dream was to be “Batkid,” the sidekick of the iconic Batman. Once Miles’ wish hit social media, thousands of volunteers, city officials, businesses and supporters came together to turn San Francisco into Gotham City for one of the biggest and most amazing Make-A-Wish projects ever done.

Batkid got to fight his way out of “crimes” and received the key to the city of San Francisco by Mayor Ed Lee for his heroism, best wishes from President Obama, and the San Francisco Chronicle produced a Gotham City Chronicle with the headline: Batkid Saves the Day.

Behind the Scenes: Miles actually waited until he felt better to have his special “Batkid Day,” so he’d be strong enough to really enjoy it. “This wish has meant closure for our family and an end to over three years of putting drugs in our son’s body,” said Miles’ Mom. “He was always fascinated with superheroes. They were crime fighters and saviors. And they always won in the end.”

In fact, Miles didn’t know he was having the special day. Instead, his mom said they were going into town to buy him a new Batman costume. When he got to the city, he found himself called to duty as the sidekick to an actor dressed like Batman. Then, he watched a broadcast where during a special news announcement from San Francisco police chief Greg Suhr asked for “Batkid” to come to the rescue.

Fun Fact: His reward was a flash mob dance to “Don’t Stop Believin”…which was interrupted by the chance to capture another bad guy, The Penguin, who had stolen the San Francisco Giants’ mascot. After he captured this villain, Batkid hit SF City Hall where he received a video tweet from President Obama thanking him for his efforts.

Now, the heartfelt story of Batkid comes to a theater near you in a documentary – it’s a lovely must see that you will touch, move and inspire you and your beautiful family!
